Starting Out

Today marks a new a day in some respects.  Why?  Because as of today I’ve decided I want to make running a part of my life.  In the past I’ve thought of running as a means to an end.  There are times that I’ve wanted to be more fit, run faster, or lose weight.  Sometimes a combination and sometimes only one was the focus.  I’ve come to the realization that running really just needs to become a part of my life.  My guess is that if I focus on learning to love running and make it a regular event, then my fitness and health goals will fall into place.

What’s more is that I can’t remember I came across an unhappy regular runner.  Runners love running.  I’ve had dreams of running races and marathons, but the reality is that I really don’t do these things because usually I don’t really enjoy running.  I can really only think of once that I really enjoyed a run.  It was back in high school during a cross country practice.  Training that day was labeled as hard and long.  That day the course was somewhere in the neighborhood of 13 miles.  At the time I thought that run would be the worst day of my life.  What actually happened was I experienced my first and only true second wind to date.  I loved it!

So here I am deciding to document my journey into the world of people who like to run.  Is it possible to learn to love running?  I certainly hope so.  And so the journey begins…

I was a little reluctant to run this morning.  I felt ok, but didn’t really feel like putting forth too much effort.  I didn’t have a distance goal, but rather a time goal.  I was shooting for an hour of running as long as everything felt reasonable.

A little background… I’ve run off and on over the past few years.  I’ve never been fast and I usually get bored quickly.  In the end I’m hoping that developing a love for running will help me overcome these pitfalls.

Here are some graphs from this morning’s run.
